Hackney Central rooms that suit fitted joinery
Hackney Central (E8) is one of the most mixed patches we work in — Victorian and Georgian terraces around Graham Road and Richmond Road, warehouse conversions near London Fields and Broadway Market, and newer flats woven between them. Each type needs a different joinery approach, and it’s rarely a case of dropping in a standard box.
Fitted wardrobes in conversion flats. A lot of E8 bedrooms are carved out of larger period rooms, so you get an odd ceiling height (often 2.9m or more) and only one usable wall. We build floor-to-ceiling wardrobes that use the full height, with a top box above the hanging rail for the things you reach twice a year, keeping the footprint tight in what are usually compact rooms.
Alcove units in Victorian reception rooms. The chimney-breast-and-alcove layout is everywhere in Hackney Central terraces. Alcove widths here vary a lot — anywhere from 700mm to over a metre — and the two sides of the same chimney breast are often different, so we measure each independently. Most briefs are closed base cabinets with open shelving above to keep the room feeling light.
Media and home-office joinery. Open-plan conversion living spaces need storage that reads as quiet furniture rather than a bulky unit. We build low media runs and slim desk nooks that tuck a workspace into a corner or a redundant alcove without dominating the room.
Working in a dense inner-city grid
E8 is tight, and mansion blocks and narrow terrace hallways both limit how big a finished component can be. We size carcasses to fit the actual route in — stair turns, door widths, lift dimensions — and assemble on site where needed rather than forcing an oversized piece up a Victorian staircase.
