Working in Clapton’s mix of housing types
Clapton is one of our most-varied postcodes for housing-stock — Victorian terraces along the streets off Lower Clapton Road, mid-century mansion blocks along the Common, ex-LA blocks around Clarence Road, and a steady supply of converted flats in former 3-storey townhouses. Each has different joinery briefs.
Victorian terrace master bedrooms (Lower Clapton, off Chatsworth Road). These are usually around 3.5m wide with one usable wardrobe wall opposite the bay window. The brief is typically a wardrobe run that uses the full 2.7–2.9m ceiling height and works around any picture-rail mouldings. Our shaker fitted wardrobe in Clapton is a typical example — full-height, painted shaker, mixed interior.
Mansion-block flats around Clapton Common. Ceilings here can be lower (2.4–2.6m) and bedrooms smaller. The brief shifts to single-bay or two-bay wardrobes that maximise hanging without crowding the bed. Often the alcoves next to original chimney breasts are the only practical wardrobe locations.
Conversion flats. The most common Clapton typology — Victorian terraces split into two flats, ground-and-garden or upper duplex. Master bedrooms here are often the back reception of the original house, so they have full ceiling heights but lose floor area to the new flat layout. Compact wardrobes (single-bay or single-alcove) earn their keep more than full-wall runs. The Clapton Pond compact wardrobe is the type.
Front-room alcove units
Almost every Clapton terrace front room has a chimney breast with cast-iron fireplace and two alcoves either side. The alcoves are usually 280–380mm deep, 700–900mm wide, with non-square geometry. We build full-height painted shaker alcove units here regularly. Sometimes the brief is closed storage on both sides; sometimes one side is closed and the other has display shelves above a low cabinet, to keep something readable in the room.
Parking and access
Most of Clapton is in Hackney’s CPZ A or N. Visitor permits via Hackney’s online system are needed for install days; we’ll remind you when to apply. For projects on Clapton Common itself, parking is easier but pavement access is sometimes tight — let us know if you’re on a high floor without a lift so we can plan deliveries.
Areas we also cover from Clapton
