Plaistow rooms that suit fitted joinery
Plaistow is close to our workshop and made up mostly of Victorian and Edwardian terraces on tight, tightly-parked streets — practical family houses where storage, not showpiece furniture, is what people commission. The room shapes are familiar and the constraints are consistent.
Fitted wardrobes in terrace bedrooms. The front bedroom over the bay is typically 3.2-3.5m wide with a ceiling around 2.6-2.7m — a touch lower than the Edwardian stock further north around Wanstead — so proportion matters and a full-height run needs careful setting-out to avoid looking heavy. We usually place the wardrobe on the wall opposite the window and keep hanging, drawers and a top box within one clean face. Rear bedrooms over the back addition often slope, and we scribe to the actual fall.
Alcove units in reception rooms. The chimney-breast-and-alcoves layout is standard, with recesses often 700-900mm wide. Families here tend to want closed cupboards below for toys and clutter with open shelves above, keeping the original fireplace as the room’s centre. Where two rooms have been knocked through, we match the cabinetry on both breasts.
Hallway and understairs storage. Plaistow hallways are narrow, so we build shallow cupboard runs and fitted understairs units — pull-out shoe racks, coat hanging and a place for the buggy — that make a busy family entrance work without blocking the passage.

Plaistow sits in Newham on terraced streets where kerb space is tight. The borough operates controlled parking zones across much of the area, so a visitor permit is usually needed for install days — we’ll flag when to arrange it. Being minutes from the workshop, we can survey and install here with very little lead time.
