The Stratford rooms we know well

Stratford covers an unusually wide spread of housing in a small area: Victorian terraces around Maryland and West Ham Lane, mid-century ex-council blocks, and the dense new-build towers of East Village and the wider Olympic Park regeneration in E20. The brief changes completely depending on which of those you live in, so we treat E15 and E20 as several different jobs rather than one.

Fitted wardrobes in new-build apartments. The commonest Stratford brief is storage for an East Village or Olympic Park flat that came with almost none. New towers have square 2.4m-ceiling bedrooms, plasterboard-on-metal-stud walls, and sometimes an awkward structural downstand or riser boxing in one corner. We build wardrobes tight to the ceiling and work the units around the downstand so it disappears into the design.

Media walls and home-office joinery. Open-plan apartment living rooms need storage that doubles as a room divider or a tidy work zone. We build media runs with concealed cable routes and slim desk returns that fold into the wall, which suits the many one- and two-bed flats where a spare room isn’t an option for a home office.

Terrace alcoves and hallway storage. In the older streets around Maryland Road and Leyton Road the work is classic East London: full-height alcove units either side of the chimney breast, and shallow cupboards down long, narrow terrace hallways that add storage without blocking the route through.

Access in the towers

Apartment work around East Village and the Olympic Park lives or dies on access. Every tower has a booked service lift with a fixed internal size, a loading bay and delivery slots set by the managing agent, so we size panels and carcasses to the lift before cutting and plan the delivery route in advance. We check all of it at survey.
